Why isn't my business showing up on Google Maps?

By Ray Burnett, founder3 min read

You search for your own service, in your own town, and your business isn't on the map. Competitors are. Here's why that usually happens, and what to check first.

This is one of the most common things I hear from local service owners. The good news: the cause is usually one of a short list, and most of them can be fixed without paying anyone. Work through these in order.

First: how Google decides who shows on the map

Google says local results are based mainly on three things:

Every fix below improves one of those three.

1. Your profile isn't verified

An unverified Google Business Profile won't show up properly in Maps. Sign in at business.google.com and look for a "Verify" prompt. Google may ask for a video, a phone call or a postcard, depending on your account.

2. Your profile is suspended

If your profile breaks Google's guidelines, it can be suspended and disappear entirely. Common triggers are keywords stuffed into the business name ("Joe's Plumbing Best Plumber Phoenix"), a virtual office or mailbox address, or a duplicate profile. Your profile dashboard will tell you if it's suspended, and Google has an appeal form for reinstatement once you've fixed the issue.

3. You're searching from too far away

Distance matters a lot. If you search from your house across town, you may not show up while competitors closer to you do. That doesn't mean customers near you can't see you. Try searching with the town name added ("lawn care in Mesa"), or ask a customer in your area what they see.

4. Your primary category is wrong

Your primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals you control. A plumber listed only as "Contractor", or a landscaper listed as "Gardener", will struggle to show for the searches that matter. Pick the most specific category that matches your main service, then add secondary categories for the rest.

5. Your profile is half filled out

Missing services, hours, service areas, photos and a description all make it harder for Google to match you to searches. Fill in every field you honestly can, and list each service you offer by name.

6. You have fewer reviews than the businesses that show up

Compare your review count and rating with the businesses that appear above you. If they have 80 reviews and you have 6, that gap is part of the story. The fix is a simple, steady habit of asking happy customers, not a one-time push. Never buy reviews or offer anything in exchange for them; Google removes them and can penalize the profile.

7. Your name, address and phone don't match across the web

Google checks your business details against other sites like Yelp, Bing, Apple Maps and industry directories. If your old phone number or old address is still out there, it muddies the picture. Search your business name and fix any listing that's wrong.

8. Your website doesn't back it up

Your website should clearly say what you do, where you do it, and how to reach you, using the same business name, phone and address as your profile. A page for each main service helps Google connect your profile to the right searches.

9. Your profile is brand new

New or recently changed profiles can take some time to settle. If everything above checks out, keep adding photos, posts and reviews, and give it a few weeks before changing things again. Constant edits can slow things down.

A quick checklist

  1. Verified? Not suspended?
  2. Most accurate primary category?
  3. Every field filled in, every service listed?
  4. Searching from inside your service area?
  5. Reviews keeping pace with competitors?
  6. Same name, address and phone everywhere?

If you've checked all of these and you're still missing, it's usually a mix of smaller things, and that's the kind of problem we look at every day.
